Serving others has always been a part of who Emily is. In every aspect of her life, Emily effortlessly serves and provides for others in a way that can only be described as “the Emily Touch.” Now at Engenius, that effect can felt throughout our office and throughout our Engenius community!
Early Life in Dillon
Emily grew up in the small town of Dillon, South Carolina. She followed her dreams and went to Clemson University hoping to study nursing. “I thought I wanted to be a nurse,” she explains, “but I ended up changing to the administrative side of healthcare.” No matter where she ended up, however, Emily knew she wanted to help and advocate for others.
After Clemson, Emily enjoyed the big city life living in Atlanta before heading back to the upstate for a job with AnMed Health. Emily worked in the Cancer Center with AnMed doing patient education and community support. She was able to add the “Emily Touch” by bringing new and impactful programming to the organization. “We were able to create support groups and provide community education like offering a cancer care 101 class for patients and their families,” Emily mentions as she reflects on the powerful impact she was able to create in that role. Little did she know the impact that work would have in her own life later.
The Start of a Family
In Spring of 2009, Emily married Michael in an intimate ceremony in downtown Greenville. Shortly after their marriage, Emily moved on from AnMed and began working for Senior Action as the Director of Programs. She planned all kinds of events from art programs and dance lessons to computer classes for the community. Not long after that, Emily and Michael welcomed their first baby Melanie, who is now 11 years old. With Melanie’s entry into the family, it was time for another career shift for Emily. “I ended up going back to work in medical education after Melanie was born because it allowed me to stay home and be more present with our children,” Emily smiles. This was a smart move as they welcomed Morgan, their second child, in 2015 and then Lucas in 2017, completing their family.
The Hard Things that Shape Us
Not long after Lucas was born, Emily was laid off. She filled the time doing contract work and then COVID hit. As if Emily and her family didn’t have enough going on raising three active children while figuring out life in a pandemic, Emily received a diagnosis in November of 2020 that she had stage 2 breast cancer. Looking back on her career, Emily mentions “I started out working with oncology doctors and nurses on how to treat the patient to later become the actual patient.”
Emily came out stronger on the other side of her diagnosis. She returned to work in the medical field for one year post-treatment before finding the Office Manager opportunity at Engenius.
The “Emily Touch” at Engenius
If you know Emily, then you know she always has the biggest smile on her face and a positive outlook on life. This attitude is reflected in all she does for the Engenius team. “I love the logistics behind planning and prepping for various things. I like being able to see things through to completion and I love being able to check things off a list,” Emily says through a big smile. We see this in all you do, Emily, and we are so thankful for your touch that you graciously add to everything you take on!
